How does an E-bike work?

Facts You Need to Know About E‑Bikes

E‑bikes are designed to make cycling easier, smoother, and more enjoyable, especially on longer distances or uphill sections. Their pedal‑assist system supports your ride while keeping the experience natural and intuitive.

How pedal assist works:

  • The assist activates a few seconds after you start pedaling.
  • The motor supports you up to a maximum speed of 25 km/h (15 mph). Once you reach this speed, the assist stops and you continue on your own.
  • If your speed drops below 25 km/h (15 mph), the assist automatically resumes.
  • Sensors immediately cut the motor power as soon as you use the brakes, ensuring full control and safety.

Important characteristics of e‑bikes:

  • They do not have a throttle.
  • They will not assist you unless you pedal — a sensor in the crank detects movement and activates the motor accordingly.

Because of these features, e‑bikes are classified as regular bicycles under Italian and EU regulations. This means you do not need insurance, license plates, or a driver’s license to ride them.
